  • Some observers have argued that an embargo of Cuba makes little sense in a post Cold War environment. What do you think?
    I absolutely agree. The embargo against Cuba is a disgrace.
  • A recent Supreme Court decision affirmed an Arizona law allowing officers to check suspected illegal immigrants for proof of immigration status. Do you think this law is a good idea?
    The proper authority for enforcement rests with the federal government. This law goes further than federal laws and even if constitutional, should be repealed.
  • The water level of Lake Mead (the reservoir near Hoover Dam) has been steadily dropping in recent years. Should the Bureau of Reclamation regulate the use of this water more strictly?
    I'm very worried about the falling water levels in that area. If this continues, then we would eventually need to consider taking action.
  • There is currently a large amount of drug violence in Mexico near the U.S. border. What would you do as President to help stabilize this situation?
    There should be better treatment options for drug users to help them overcome addiction, and to reduce the market for cocaine and other controlled substances.
  • What is your position on gay marriage?
    Gay marriage should be protected at the federal level. The Defense of Marriage Act should be repealed.
  • Should military women serve in combat roles?
    I will defer to military brass on this question. They should do whatever best protects American interests and the safety of our troops.
  • Do you support allowing the Bush Tax Cuts to expire for high-income households at the end of 2012?
    I support letting the cuts expire. It's time that wealthy Americans paid their fair share for the opportunities our society gives to them.
  • Overall, are you satisfied with the trade relationship between the U.S. and China?
    This relationship has its pros and cons. China should be doing more to live up to their end of our trade agreements, and they must stop manipulating their currency.
  • Would you sign a bill to make English the Official Language of the United States?
    While English is our common language, I don't think it's wise at this point to declare it an 'official language' or to forbid other languages in government business.
  • What is your opinion on directing some Department of Education funding towards a school voucher program?
    This practice undermines our public education system, and should not be permitted.
  • Would it help our economy if government employment was increased? Or would this divert valuable resources from the private sector?
    I think it's a bad thing that overall government employment has dropped during the recession. This continues to be one the biggest obstacles to a stronger recovery.
  • What is your opinion on the 'gunwalking' tactics that led to the 'Fast and Furious' scandal?
    It makes sense to track gun sales over a period of time, to get a better picture of who is buying them, and to try and arrest more important cartel leaders.
  • The Affordable Care Act (i.e. 'Obamacare') will cap annual premiums, require minimum coverage levels, and outlaw discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. What do you think?
    I'm convinced that this program will work. This is a good compromise allowing private insurers to conduct business, while securing access to health insurance for more Americans. If anything, the increased transparency will reduce insurance costs.
  • Do you think the Death with Dignity Act in Oregon could be a model for broader federal legislation on the issue?
    That's ridiculous. Of course not.
  • Do you see any need for a United States Institute of Peace?
    This agency performs valuable research on how to avoid future conflicts. It will pay for itself many times over if it succeeds at that mission.
  • Should American workers have the right to invest their Social Security withholdings in private accounts?
    This is the first step that those who wish to abolish Social Security would like to implement. The integrity of Social Security should be preserved at all times.
  • What is your opinion on the Tea Party movement?
    A funny thing happened on January 20, 2009 -- millions of people who supported Bush's deficits suddenly flip-flopped into budget hawks. This group is obviously just a political front for the far right wing of the Republican Party.
  • Federal funding for Community Health Centers has more than doubled in the past ten years to over $2 billion annually. Is this an example of out of control government spending?
    This is a worthy program and I have no problem with the amount of money that is allocated to it.
  • Is there too much regulation of the American logging industry?
    Current practices are much too permissive. Priceless old-growth forest has been almost completely destroyed, and we are headed into the future on an unsustainable trajectory.
  • Would you consider military action in Syria if the impasse between Bashar Assad and the rebels there continues?
    I will do what is necessary to preserve freedom and human rights in Syria. It's impossible to say whether that means committing the U.S. military or not at this point.
  • Elizabeth Warren is currently fighting the good fight in the Massachusetts Senate race. Would you be open to offering her a position in your Administration if she falls short there?
    She was supposed to be the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Board, remember? Republican obstructionism prevented that. I'm confident that she will do well against Scott Brown in the Massachusetts Senate race.
  • What will be the overriding theme of your nomination speech at the Democratic Convention?
    I will talk about the myriad methods that the Republicans use to divide our country. I will remind everyone that Democrats are truly the party of the common person -- regardless of background or income level.
  • Be perfectly honest. How do you like Mitt Romney as a person?
    Mitt Romney is a great American success story. His efforts over the years have been admirable. I just don't think he has the best policies in mind for America.
  • What is your guiding foreign policy philosophy?
    Human Rights -- It's past time that we cut allegiances with dictators like the House of Saud and truly lived up to our ideals. I will only support or give aid to democratically elected leaders.
  • In the most general terms, what will be your overall campaign strategy against Romney?
    Behind the scenes my surrogates have plenty of dirt to spread about Romney and the Republicans. As President, I will stick to a message of optimism and hope in my own campaign speeches.
