  • What is your overall position on the Vietnam War?
    We should stop bombing North Vietnam and attempt to negotiate a peace settlement. In the mean time, we should be putting our troops at risk only when absolutely necessary.
  • If elected, what will you do to get the student and Negro riots in this country under control?
    If we had peace in Vietnam and more investment in education here at home, we wouldn't be having these riots.
  • What is your opinion of Lyndon Johnson's new Medicare program?
    Medicare is only the beginning of what we need to do in this country. I support a national health care system for all Americans.
  • Are you satisfied with this nation's economic performance over the previous five years?
    How can anyone be satisfied with the course our nation has taken? Inflation is killing the value of the dollar and the gold standard itself is at risk. Unemployment is highest under the Johnson Administration among the very people he claims to care about the most.
  • Are you satisfied with the progress of desegregation in this country since the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964?
    I strongly support what we have done to end the insidious practice of segregation in the South. However I'm also alarmed at some of the ideas I've heard about forced integration of neighborhoods, or the proposed busing of students to distant schools.
  • Would you consider sending troops into Laos, Cambodia, or North Vietnam to more aggressively combat the flow of Communist troops into South Vietnam?
    I don't think that kind of escalation is wise. The last thing we need is a regional war. I would stick to our mission of defending South Vietnam and preventing the spread of Communism.
  • What do you think about the efforts of the AFL-CIO and other large unions? Do they have a positive effect on America?
    The AFL-CIO is a centerpiece of the great American bargain. Our economy can never thrive unless the people who work to keep it going thrive as well. I fully support the AFL-CIO.
  • Should Lyndon Johnson have been able to prevent the Tet Offensive?
    I'm worried that for most or all of 1967, Lyndon Johnson repeatedly assured us that the North Vietnamese were on their last legs. It's difficult to assess the situation when we can't rely on the information that we have.
  • What is the maximum number of troops that you would commit to Vietnam?
    We need to reduce our troop strength to the minimum necessary level to prevent the downfall of South Vietnam while we work these issues out at the bargaining table.
  • Did the Supreme Court overstep its bounds in Loving v. Virginia by declaring state miscegenation statutes unconstitutional?
    I'm not going to comment on a decision like this one. I certainly don't support miscegenation laws by any means, but I also think the Court has to be careful about overstepping the rights of the states.
  • What do you think of programs that require schools to use busing to achieve racial balance?
    I do agree with the idea that education is a local matter. I'm not especially opposed to busing where local authorities deem it necessary, but I would only use the federal government in extraordinary circumstances.
  • Can you comment on the newly created Head Start program?
    Programs like Head Start are the only way that we will end poverty in our cities and rural districts. I fought for this program from the beginning and I will support it as President.
  • If elected as President, what would you do to lower the inflation rate in this country, which currently stands at over 4%?
    Right now we have the strongest economy almost in the history of the United States. Unemployment is at 3% and our national output is growing at a furious pace. Compared to this, our 4% inflation rate is a pretty minor concern.
  • Have you given any thought to programs that would set racial quotas for job hiring or college admissions, in order to accelerate the process of integration?
    What we have now is a good start, but we need to be taking more affirmative action to fight against the effects of racial injustice in this country.
  • What do you think of the late Dr. Martin Luther King?
    Dr. King is an American hero. I'm proud of his efforts to desegregate the southern schools and businesses, and I was deeply affected by his tragic demise this year.
  • What is your position on expanding the Clean Air Act of 1963? Do you believe that stricter enforcement against pollutants is necessary, or does the current law suffice?
    I dream of a country where every citizen has clean air to breathe. The Clean Air Act is a good start but I'm not opposed to further legislation in this area.
  • Do you support the Child Nutrition Act of 1966, which provides free breakfast and milk to qualified schoolchildren of impoverished backgrounds? Or do you believe that the program is too costly and constitutes a misuse of federal power?
    This is a sensible piece of legislation. I support it and I think that every decent American supports it too.
  • The unemployment rate is currently under 4%, in spite of the chaos that prevails in our nation. What will you do as president to keep unemployment low?
    There is far more we can do. Jobs training programs and a continued fight against discrimination will ensure that all Americans can share in the low unemployment rate.
  • Do we need more spending in the War on Poverty, especially in light of the riots since 1965?
    We are the greatest nation on earth and we cannot rest until every citizen has an opportunity to share in that prosperity.
  • On the weekend before the election, Lyndon Johnson's peace negotiations have collapsed with the North Vietnamese. Even worse, there are rumors that a Nixon operative has sabotaged the negotiations. Nixon swears to you on his honor that he is innocent. Will you make this an issue over the last two days of the campaign?
    This is bordering on treason. The American people deserve to hear about this.
  • What will be the overall message of your campaign?
    I am a serious candidate for President of the United States. I will protect law-abiding Americans from social disorder and I will win the war in Vietnam.
  • Do you plan to make a strong effort in any of the non-Southern states?
    My goal is to sweep the South and prevent either candidate from achieving an electoral majority. I will make this region my primary focus.
  • What can you say to the people of the South to dampen the appeal of Richard Nixon?
    Richard Nixon is a California yankee and an interloper. He does not deserve the support of a decent southern man.
  • What is more important to you -- competing with Nixon in the border states (to help Humphrey) or winning over Humphrey voters in the northern cities (to help Nixon)?
    I'm just going to run my campaign and whatever happens between those two will happen.
  • If there is no majority in the electoral college, what are your goals at the bargaining table?
    Whatever ends up happening on election day, I cannot comment about the aftermath at this point. If that scenario develops I will hear what each side has to say and make a decision at that point.
