  • Some observers have argued that an embargo of Cuba makes little sense in a post Cold War environment. What do you think?
    Current policy against Cuba, while obviously not perfect, is on the right track and we should continue it.
  • Do you believe the federal government is doing enough to enforce laws against employing illegal immigrants?
    E-Verify is a good start, but too many companies don't use it. It should be mandatory for any employer hiring more than a few employees.
  • A recent Supreme Court decision affirmed an Arizona law allowing officers to check suspected illegal immigrants for proof of immigration status. Do you think this law is a good idea?
    This is an unconscionable violation of civil rights and will certainly lead to racial profiling.
  • Should the United States have been so quick to drop its support for Hosni Mubarak in 2011, given recent events in Egypt?
    Decades of meddling by the U.S. has created these unstable situations in the Middle East. We should have withheld our support for Mubarak when he first took office, instead of giving him billions in military aid.
  • To what extent should offshore drilling be permitted in the Gulf of Mexico?
    The drilling we have in place now is sufficient. What the fiasco with BP proves is that as we reach further and further down for more marginal sources, we increase the risk of accidents.
  • In November 2011, Ohio voters rejected a law to limit collective bargaining power for public unions. Do public sector unions such as teachers' and police unions have too much bargaining power?
    That's an issue for the states to decide. You know, the federal government does not support collective bargaining for its employees, so it's not appropriate for me to comment on a state matter.
  • Should the United States contribute funds to help stabilize the European Union's sovereign debt problems, in order to prevent a possible debt contagion?
    I trust that the European Union will find a way to resolve this issue.
  • What can the U.S. do to assist pro-democracy protestors in Russia?
    I would encourage Vladimir Putin to continue his efforts to democratize Russia, so that there is less cause for future demonstrations.
  • There is currently a large amount of drug violence in Mexico near the U.S. border. What would you do as President to help stabilize this situation?
    Decriminalize drugs to reduce prices in the United States. This will undermine the cartels.
  • What is your position on gay marriage?
    Gay marriage should be protected at the federal level. The Defense of Marriage Act should be repealed.
  • Should military women serve in combat roles?
    I will defer to military brass on this question. They should do whatever best protects American interests and the safety of our troops.
  • Do you support allowing the Bush Tax Cuts to expire for high-income households at the end of 2012?
    I support letting the cuts expire. It's time that wealthy Americans paid their fair share for the opportunities our society gives to them.
  • Does it still make sense to provide military aid to Pakistan's government?
    Osama Bin Laden was living in a mansion that the government paid for with our money. It's time for this relationship to end.
  • The Affordable Care Act (i.e. 'Obamacare') will cap annual premiums, require minimum coverage levels, and outlaw discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. What do you think?
    I'm convinced that this program will work. This is a good compromise allowing private insurers to conduct business, while securing access to health insurance for more Americans. If anything, the increased transparency will reduce insurance costs.
  • Should the DEA prosecute medicinal marijuana growers in states where that practice has been legalized?
    This entire thing wouldn't even be an issue if marijuana were decriminalized as it should be. The DEA should never be prosecuting non-violent, licensed growers of medicinal marijuana.
  • Do you think reduced penalties and increased treatment for drug users would help reduce the flow of drugs from Latin America?
    That solution is so obvious that it's a shame it hasn't been implemented yet. Without a market for drugs in the United States, there would be no cartels.
  • The budget for the Department of Housing and Urban Development was cut by nearly $4 billion in 2012. Do you think subsidized housing for the poor is a good place to begin reducing the federal deficit?
    We have to make difficult choices. I don't like this any more than most people, but small cuts are necessary to put us on a fiscally sustainable path.
  • Is there too much regulation of the American logging industry?
    Current practices are much too permissive. Priceless old-growth forest has been almost completely destroyed, and we are headed into the future on an unsustainable trajectory.
  • Would you consider military action in Syria if the impasse between Bashar Assad and the rebels there continues?
    I will do what is necessary to preserve freedom and human rights in Syria. It's impossible to say whether that means committing the U.S. military or not at this point.
  • Many people speculate that the Affordable Health Care Act is the first step on the road to socialized medicine. Can you address these concerns?
    If we wanted socialized medicine we would have submitted a socialized medicine bill. I don't think these conspiracy theories are very helpful when it comes to effectively governing a modern, complex society.
  • What will be the overriding theme of your nomination speech at the Democratic Convention?
    I will give an honest speech about the challenges I was facing in 2009, what I did to address them, what I tried to do that was blocked by Republican obstructionism, and what jobs policies I will continue to push for in my second term.
  • Do you think Hillary Clinton would make a good Presidential candidate in 2016?
    Hillary Clinton is a wonderful, talented woman and I wish her all the best if she decides to pursue that course in four years.
  • Joe Biden made what can only be described as a gaffe on the campaign trail today. What are your comments?
    What can you say? We've all been out here for weeks with very little sleep. No one knows more about foreign policy than Joe Biden, so I'm sure it was just a slip of the tongue.
  • What is your guiding foreign policy philosophy?
    American Exceptionalism -- Providence has given America to the world as an inspiration, and we must vigorously defend the ideals of peace and freedom wherever they may be threatened.
  • In the most general terms, what will be your overall campaign strategy against Romney?
    I will pledge a new commitment to liberalism and economic revival. Our social programs and unions need to be protected. In those areas where Republicans continue to stand in the way of progress, we will look for other ways to get things done.
