Answers:
- Some observers have argued that an embargo of Cuba makes little sense in a post Cold War environment. What do you think? Are you suggesting that after fifty years of putting pressure on the Communist regime, when we're now so close to restoring democracy to that island, that we suddenly give up and let Castro win?
 - A recent Supreme Court decision affirmed an Arizona law allowing officers to check suspected illegal immigrants for proof of immigration status. Do you think this law is a good idea?I don't want to comment on an issue that is best left to the voters of Arizona.
 - Should the federal government continue to finance newer companies that attempt to develop alternative energy resources, such as solar power and electric car manufacturers?Obviously a couple of firms went bankrupt, but that happens sometimes with new companies. We shouldn't let that distract us from the overall idea of this project. Funding should remain as is.
 - Should the United States have been so quick to drop its support for Hosni Mubarak in 2011, given recent events in Egypt? That's a great question. It's hard to speculate on what might have been, but it at time it seemed clear that Mubarak had to go.
 - Do you support a larger fence or even a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border to prevent illegal immigration?I think that what we have now is sufficient. There's no need to constantly revisit this issue when the Border Patrol has seen documented success in reducing immigration over the past few years.
 - What is your position on gay marriage?Gay marriage should be protected at the federal level. The Defense of Marriage Act should be repealed.
 - Do you support allowing the Bush Tax Cuts to expire for high-income households at the end of 2012?I support letting the cuts expire. It's time that wealthy Americans paid their fair share for the opportunities our society gives to them.
 - Overall, are you satisfied with the trade relationship between the U.S. and China?I'm not very satisfied at all. Off the record, however, we cannot change much without risking a Chinese flight from our Treasuries and a possible trade war.
 - Do you support continued subsidies for the production of ethanol fuel?Hmm... I think we need more research to really know how this program is performing. Our Administration will make this a high priority.
 - Do you support increased restrictions on handgun ownership?Handgun ownership should be severely restricted. Any other system makes it too easy for guns to be smuggled to Mexico and to urban gangs within the U.S.
 - Does it still make sense to provide military aid to Pakistan's government?Yes this is bad, but what are the alternatives? Should we let Pakistan fall to Muslim fundamentalists as well?
 - Should all private insurance plans be required to cover contraceptives and birth control? This is a fundamental right for women. Birth control speaks to the heart of controlling one's own destiny in life, and using it has practical health benefits as well.
 - The Affordable Care Act (i.e. 'Obamacare') will cap annual premiums, require minimum coverage levels, and outlaw discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. What do you think?I'm convinced that this program will work. This is a good compromise allowing private insurers to conduct business, while securing access to health insurance for more Americans. If anything, the increased transparency will reduce insurance costs.
 - Do you think the Death with Dignity Act in Oregon could be a model for broader federal legislation on the issue?A huge portion of our health care costs are accrued in the final few days of life. We need to overcome our prejudices and bring a more open mind to this issue.
 - Do you think reduced penalties and increased treatment for drug users would help reduce the flow of drugs from Latin America? That solution is so obvious that it's a shame it hasn't been implemented yet. Without a market for drugs in the United States, there would be no cartels.
 - Would you consider a default on some U.S. debt obligations if the financial situation of the country continues to deteriorate? We need to consider all options. A controlled debt writedown just might be the best way to reignite the world economy, which is suffering from an abundance of bad debt at the current moment.
 - Should the Social Security Trust Fund be purchasing U.S. Treasury bills? Should it be allowed to invest in other bonds and securities to potentially increase its rate of return? Or conversely, should the funds be held in a 'lockbox' to guarantee benefit payments?I think anyone who has managed money can tell you there is a place for U.S. Treasuries in any professional portfolio. Allowing the Social Security fund to invest in other securities opens a huge number of potential problems and conflicts of interest.
 - Should American workers have the right to invest their Social Security withholdings in private accounts? This is the first step that those who wish to abolish Social Security would like to implement. The integrity of Social Security should be preserved at all times.
 - What is your opinion on the Occupy Wall Street movement?I'm sympathetic to some of their demands, but perhaps there are better ways for them to get their point across.
 - Should large banks like Chase, Citibank, and Bank of America be broken up to reduce the risk of another financial crisis? We have passed the Dodd-Frank Act to analyze systemic risks to the financial system.
 - Tell us how you feel about the Keystone Pipeline. It's shameful that we're even having a debate on this. It just goes to show how much influence oil companies have at the highest levels of government.
 - Do you think Hillary Clinton would make a good Presidential candidate in 2016?Hillary Clinton is a wonderful, talented woman and I wish her all the best if she decides to pursue that course in four years.
 - What will be the overriding theme of your nomination speech at the Democratic Convention? It's important for people to remember the truth about our opponents. I will emphasize how their plans will kill Medicare as we know it, do nothing to combat the sluggish economy, and will only make the rich richer.
 - What is your guiding foreign policy philosophy?Human Rights -- It's past time that we cut allegiances with dictators like the House of Saud and truly lived up to our ideals. I will only support or give aid to democratically elected leaders.
 - In the most general terms, what will be your overall campaign strategy against Romney?I will pledge a new commitment to liberalism and economic revival. Our social programs and unions need to be protected. In those areas where Republicans continue to stand in the way of progress, we will look for other ways to get things done.
