Answers:

  • A recent Supreme Court decision affirmed an Arizona law allowing officers to check suspected illegal immigrants for proof of immigration status. Do you think this law is a good idea?
This is an unconscionable violation of civil rights and will certainly lead to racial profiling.
  • The water level of Lake Mead (the reservoir near Hoover Dam) has been steadily dropping in recent years. Should the Bureau of Reclamation regulate the use of this water more strictly?
Yes. People will continue to move into the region and place an unsustainable burden on the water supply unless the price accurately reflects current and future scarcity.
  • How long should U.S. troops remain in Afghanistan?
    U.S. troops should leave immediately.
  • What is your position on gay marriage?
Gay marriage should be protected at the federal level. The Defense of Marriage Act should be repealed.
  • Should military women serve in combat roles?
Separate is inherently unequal. There is nothing preventing women from serving in combat roles.
  • Do you support allowing the Bush Tax Cuts to expire for high-income households at the end of 2012?
I support letting the cuts expire. It's time that wealthy Americans paid their fair share for the opportunities our society gives to them.
  • Overall, are you satisfied with the trade relationship between the U.S. and China?
The U.S.-China relationship has destroyed middle class jobs for close to three decades. We need drastic changes including more protection for American manufacturing.
  • Would it help our economy if government employment was increased? Or would this divert valuable resources from the private sector?
Government employment should be increased during recessions to mitigate the effects of a drop in private sector output.
  • Do you support increased restrictions on handgun ownership?
Handgun ownership should be severely restricted. Any other system makes it too easy for guns to be smuggled to Mexico and to urban gangs within the U.S.
  • Should all private insurance plans be required to cover contraceptives and birth control?
This is a fundamental right for women. Birth control speaks to the heart of controlling one's own destiny in life, and using it has practical health benefits as well.
  • The Affordable Care Act (i.e. 'Obamacare') will cap annual premiums, require minimum coverage levels, and outlaw discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. What do you think?
There should be a public insurance company offering health care to all Americans. Private insurers are simply too greedy and too likely to turn down people with pre-existing health conditions.
  • Would you support a Constitutional Amendment to overturn some provisions of the Citizens United ruling, affecting campaign finance by PAC's?
This is one of the worst decisions in the history of the court. If they can't see that campaign finance regulation is entirely constitutional, then we do need to have an Amendment in place.
  • Should the DEA prosecute medicinal marijuana growers in states where that practice has been legalized?
This entire thing wouldn't even be an issue if marijuana were decriminalized as it should be. The DEA should never be prosecuting non-violent, licensed growers of medicinal marijuana.
  • Is it time for the federal government to cut spending, even with the economy growing at less than 2% annually?
Absolutely not. If anything, we should be increasing the size of government right now to fight the stagnant economy. Had the size of the initial Stimulus Act in 2009 been sufficient, for instance, we wouldn't be having these problems now.
  • Should taxpayers be forced to subsidize Planned Parenthood via federal subsidies?
Planned Parenthood is an essential component of our public health system. The right of women to control their bodies and their reproductive destinies is inviolable.
  • Should federal fuel taxes be slightly increased (they have been the same since 1993) to avoid another catastrophe like the Minnesota bridge collapse of 2007?
I don't see a problem with a small increase. We should be encouraging other forms of transportation, and on top of that our highways are woefully underfunded.
  • If elected, what will you do to repeal Obamacare?
Obamacare is settled law at this point, unfortunately. As President I will make sure that its programs are administered in the most efficient way possible, to give this program the best chance of success.
  • During your tenure, Bain Capital laid off thousands of workers at various companies that it purchased. Are you proud of your work at that company?
Joseph Schumpeter coined the term of "creative destruction". Society will never evolve if some people aren't relocated into more productive pursuits from time to time.
  • Would you nominate any Democrats to your cabinet if elected?
Hillary Clinton has done an outstanding job as Secretary of State. I would be glad to have her on board for my Administration.
  • Recent reports have highlighted the large amount of money that you and your wife spend on racing horses. Have you ever bet more than $10,000 on a horse race?
Sometimes if you feel strongly about something, you have to back that up with a little cash. $10,000 is nothing for someone who's as wealthy as I am.
  • What will be the overriding theme of your nomination speech at the Republican Convention?
I will address the long-term danger that liberalism has to create an ossified, uncreative society. I will also emphasize the danger to our individual and collective rights that is inherent Obama's philosophy.
  • What is your guiding foreign policy philosophy?
Non-Intervention -- Most of our foreign troop deployments are relics of the Cold War. We need to stop occupying other nations and focus on fixing our problems here at home.
  • Do you have any plans to offer Sarah Palin a role in your Administration?
Sarah Palin is a very talented, authentic woman. I'm sure we could find a place for her in a Romney Administration.
  • To what extent will you speak about your religious faith (Mormonism) on the campaign trail?
The Mormon Church has been the guiding force of my life. It's only natural for me to discuss this influence in my campaign speeches.
  • In the most general terms, what will be your overall campaign strategy against Obama?
We will attack Barack Obama relentlessly. He has gone back on his pledge to clean up our political system, he has destroyed hundreds of thousands of jobs in his first term, his values are out of touch with those of most Americans, and his health care reform is disastrous.
