  • Should the government be doing more to stabilize home prices?
    For the most part, I don't think that's appropriate. There are some limited areas, like relaxing restrictions on foreign ownership, where we can still help out.
  • A recent Supreme Court decision affirmed an Arizona law allowing officers to check suspected illegal immigrants for proof of immigration status. Do you think this law is a good idea?
    The federal government has forced Arizona's hand by being too lax on enforcement for far too long.
  • Do you have an opinion on net neutrality?
    In limited cases, to ensure the smooth functioning of the net on the technical side, I would consider some restrictions. But entire websites should never be blocked to end users, as some have speculated.
  • What is your position on gay marriage?
    Under no circumstances should the sacred institution of marriage be undermined. The Defense of Marriage Act was passed specifially to address this issue.
  • Do you support allowing the Bush Tax Cuts to expire for high-income households at the end of 2012?
    Perhaps we can consider letting these expire at some point in the future, but for now we are mired in a stagnant economy and need to avoid tax increases.
  • Would it help our economy if government employment was increased? Or would this divert valuable resources from the private sector?
    It's dangerous to rely too much on government as opposed to the private sector. We shouldn't be looking at government spending and employment to resolve these issues.
  • Do you support increased restrictions on handgun ownership?
    Gun rights are protected by the Second Amendment. Furthermore, an armed citizenry is our best defense against crime and government tyranny.
  • The Affordable Care Act (i.e. 'Obamacare') will cap annual premiums, require minimum coverage levels, and outlaw discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. What do you think?
    I'm convinced that this program will work. This is a good compromise allowing private insurers to conduct business, while securing access to health insurance for more Americans. If anything, the increased transparency will reduce insurance costs.
  • Do you have any comment to make on the performance of Ben Bernanke as Chairman of the Federal Reserve?
    Bernanke has performed admirably given the challenges he has faced.
  • Should American workers have the right to invest their Social Security withholdings in private accounts?
    If practical I would support a program that allows younger workers to invest a certain portion of their Social Security taxes into a different program.
  • What is your opinion on the Tea Party movement?
    Conservatives operate under the "big tent" philosophy. This is just one of many valued groups within the conservative umbrella.
  • Are you satisfied with the provisions within the 2012 Federal Highway Bill that could salvage over two million jobs in the construction industry?
    Maybe we had our disagreements over the exact size and nature of this spending, but nobody seriously thinks that we should stop funding our highways.
  • How do you feel about capitalism and the free market?
    I am a firm proponent of the free market. We simply need effective regulation to make sure that the economy works as best as it possibly can.
  • Should military spending be cut to help reduce the deficit? If so, by how much?
    Undermining our national security is not the best way to address our government deficit. I support a strong defense under any circumstances.
  • Federal funding for Community Health Centers has more than doubled in the past ten years to over $2 billion annually. Is this an example of out of control government spending?
    Some money for these programs is fine. This particular one is definitely too large and should not continue to increase in size while the rest of our economy is struggling.
  • What is the best way to make college more affordable for young people?
    Student loans should be disbursed with regard to a student's major and grade point average. This would encourage students to choose productive majors and would decrease the debt burden for graduates later in life.
  • What do you think the next steps should be in regards to Medicare?
    Medicare is a good program. We need to find some way of controlling costs and of more effectively managing care, but the overall program is sound.
  • Mitt Romney was the CEO of Bain Capital for many years. What can you say about his time at that firm?
    Mitt and I certainly have our differences, but his story of success at Bain Capital is an admirable example of American enterprise in action.
  • Christina Romer -- formerly the Chairperson on your Council of Economic Advisors -- stated in 2009 that unemployment would be less than 6% by 2012 if the stimulus package was enacted. What went wrong, and did the results of the stimulus have any bearing on her resignation?
    First of all, this had no bearing on her decision to leave the Obama Administration. Secondly, the economy was in much worse shape in early 2009 than anyone realized. Since that time we have repeatedly tried to pass additional stimulus measures and have been thwarted by House Republicans at every opportunity.
  • Many people speculate that the Affordable Health Care Act is the first step on the road to socialized medicine. Can you address these concerns?
    If we wanted socialized medicine we would have submitted a socialized medicine bill. I don't think these conspiracy theories are very helpful when it comes to effectively governing a modern, complex society.
  • Some liberals say that you have done more to help Wall Street banks than hard-working Americans. Are you open to a more universal program of mortgage write-downs if housing prices continue to decline?
    The financial system is unstable enough without bringing a policy like this into play. I think it is well-intentioned, but it wouldn't necessarily be very helpful.
  • What will be the overriding theme of your nomination speech at the Democratic Convention?
    I will talk about the myriad methods that the Republicans use to divide our country. I will remind everyone that Democrats are truly the party of the common person -- regardless of background or income level.
  • The 2012 Federal Highway Bill that you signed bars the use of federal funds for red-light traffic cameras. Do you agree with this provision?
    Of course I agree with this. I am a little uncomfortable with using federal funds for those types of cameras.
  • What is your guiding foreign policy philosophy?
    Pragmatism -- Our foreign policy right now is effective. We need to guide foreign nations towards democracy and open markets. Doing so will increase the world's prosperity and decrease the chance of future wars.
  • In the most general terms, what will be your overall campaign strategy against Romney?
    I will promise a fresh start in overcoming the gridlock in Washington. In my second term I will reach out to moderates and sensible Republicans to find common, pragmatic solutions to our most pressing issues.
