    The Confederate Flag is a symbol of slavery, racism, and rebellion against the United States. It's abominable that in 2012, any state could consider flying such a symbol.
  • Do you believe the federal government is doing enough to enforce laws against employing illegal immigrants?
    The Department of Homeland Security is deporting hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants each year. How can anyone suggest that we're not trying to address this issue?
  • A recent Supreme Court decision affirmed an Arizona law allowing officers to check suspected illegal immigrants for proof of immigration status. Do you think this law is a good idea?
    The proper authority for enforcement rests with the federal government. This law goes further than federal laws and even if constitutional, should be repealed.
  • How long should U.S. troops remain in Afghanistan?
    As long as it takes to ensure their transition to democracy. We cannot let the Taliban undermine us, or we may soon witness further terrorist attacks like those of 9-11.
  • What is your position on gay marriage?
    Gay marriage should be protected at the federal level. The Defense of Marriage Act should be repealed.
  • Is the United States too reliant on fossil fuels for its energy needs?
    Fossil fuels and coal are the backbone of our energy supply. If we got rid of those, what would we have left? We have to be realistic and realize that our options are limited.
  • Do you support allowing the Bush Tax Cuts to expire for high-income households at the end of 2012?
    I support letting the cuts expire. It's time that wealthy Americans paid their fair share for the opportunities our society gives to them.
  • Would you sign a bill to make English the Official Language of the United States?
    While English is our common language, I don't think it's wise at this point to declare it an 'official language' or to forbid other languages in government business.
  • Michigan was one of the hardest hit states in the recent recession. Do you support higher taxes on foreign vehicles while that auto industry regroups in that state?
    Absolutely. We need to create an environment where American products can compete fairly with foreign imports.
  • Should middle school students learn about contraception in health class, or will this simply encourage them to experiment?
    This is a sensible policy that will reduce teen pregnancies and help our children make informed decisions.
  • The Affordable Care Act (i.e. 'Obamacare') will cap annual premiums, require minimum coverage levels, and outlaw discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. What do you think?
    There should be a public insurance company offering health care to all Americans. Private insurers are simply too greedy and too likely to turn down people with pre-existing health conditions.
  • The maximum duration of unemployment insurance, with all extensions factored in, has been reduced from 99 weeks. Do you think this is appropriate in the current economic climate?
    Some economists estimate that the unemployment rate would be 1-2% lower if unemployment benefits were not so long in duration.
  • Who are the real job creators in this country -- hardworking American citizens or Washington bureaucrats?
    American small business, obviously. I will be their champion as President.
  • This morning you went to an elementary school and read books to a class of second-graders. How did you enjoy yourself?
    I had a fantastic time. Days like today remind me of why we need more vigorous standardized testing to monitor the quality of our school systems.
  • The most recent poll showed you slipping by a couple of percentage points. Are you planning on making any changes in your campaign to address this?
    The only day that matters is election day. I think the fundamental incompetence of my opponent will be obvious by that point.
  • Mitt Romney was the CEO of Bain Capital for many years. What can you say about his time at that firm?
    Obviously he was quite successful. I'm not convinced that all of that success came in a way that the American people would approve of, but that's up to the voters to decide.
  • Christina Romer -- formerly the Chairperson on your Council of Economic Advisors -- stated in 2009 that unemployment would be less than 6% by 2012 if the stimulus package was enacted. What went wrong, and did the results of the stimulus have any bearing on her resignation?
    First of all, this had no bearing on her decision to leave the Obama Administration. Secondly, the economy was in much worse shape in early 2009 than anyone realized. Since that time we have repeatedly tried to pass additional stimulus measures and have been thwarted by House Republicans at every opportunity.
  • What will be the overriding theme of your nomination speech at the Democratic Convention?
    I will give an honest speech about the challenges I was facing in 2009, what I did to address them, what I tried to do that was blocked by Republican obstructionism, and what jobs policies I will continue to push for in my second term.
  • Do you think Hillary Clinton would make a good Presidential candidate in 2016?
    Hillary Clinton is a wonderful, talented woman and I wish her all the best if she decides to pursue that course in four years.
  • Would you support an Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution to protect women's rights?
    Absolutely I would. We need to reaffirm our collective commitment to this issue.
  • Joe Biden made what can only be described as a gaffe on the campaign trail today. What are your comments?
    It's certainly alarming to hear statements like these from someone as high-up as Joe Biden. Hopefully he can explain himself a little more clearly in the next few days.
  • Be perfectly honest. How do you like Mitt Romney as a person?
    Mitt Romney is a great American success story. His efforts over the years have been admirable. I just don't think he has the best policies in mind for America.
  • What is your guiding foreign policy philosophy?
    American Exceptionalism -- Providence has given America to the world as an inspiration, and we must vigorously defend the ideals of peace and freedom wherever they may be threatened.
  • In the most general terms, what will be your overall campaign strategy against Romney?
    I will promise a fresh start in overcoming the gridlock in Washington. In my second term I will reach out to moderates and sensible Republicans to find common, pragmatic solutions to our most pressing issues.
  • Some on the left thought that you were not very vigorous in your opposition to the anti-union policies of Governor Scott Walker in Wisconsin. What do you have to say about this?
    Of course I am opposed to the policies of Scott Walker. The only reason I wasn't in Wisconsin on the day of his recall election was that I needed to campaign in more competitive states to maximize our chances of winning this fall.
