- Should the Confederate flag be removed entirely from the South Carolina statehouse grounds?I would prefer to see it go, but there's not much I could do to make that happen as President. It's an issue for South Carolinians to decide.
- A recent Supreme Court decision affirmed an Arizona law allowing officers to check suspected illegal immigrants for proof of immigration status. Do you think this law is a good idea? The federal government has forced Arizona's hand by being too lax on enforcement for far too long.
- Do you have an opinion on net neutrality? In limited cases, to ensure the smooth functioning of the net on the technical side, I would consider some restrictions. But entire websites should never be blocked to end users, as some have speculated.
- How long should U.S. troops remain in Afghanistan? The U.S. presence should be scaled down to the minimum necessary to prevent a Taliban takeover. Hopefully we can withdraw all of our troops within a couple of years.
- What is your position on gay marriage?I'm opposed this personally. I think that, you know, different states have different opinions on this matter and it's best left to them to decide on the issue.
- Should military women serve in combat roles?I will defer to military brass on this question. They should do whatever best protects American interests and the safety of our troops.
- Do you support allowing the Bush Tax Cuts to expire for high-income households at the end of 2012?Perhaps we can consider letting these expire at some point in the future, but for now we are mired in a stagnant economy and need to avoid tax increases.
- The United States has historically subsidized corn producers. With recent price increases in the corn market, do you still believe that such a program is necessary? The Department of Agriculture uses subsidies to rationally manage food production. It would be foolish to reverse that policy.
- What is your opinion on directing some Department of Education funding towards a school voucher program? In limited cases, such as those currently in place, there is a role for vouchers. But improving public education should be our primary focus.
- Michigan was one of the hardest hit states in the recent recession. Do you support higher taxes on foreign vehicles while that auto industry regroups in that state?I think that's a little extreme. I do support measures to assist displaced workers in Michigan as they seek other jobs and education.
- Would it help our economy if government employment was increased? Or would this divert valuable resources from the private sector? It's dangerous to rely too much on government as opposed to the private sector. We shouldn't be looking at government spending and employment to resolve these issues.
- Do you support increased restrictions on handgun ownership? Some limited, sensible regulation is prudent. Overall, the right to own a gun should be protected.
- The Affordable Care Act (i.e. 'Obamacare') will cap annual premiums, require minimum coverage levels, and outlaw discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. What do you think? This is the wrong way to reform the American health care system. We should be focusing on malpractice reform and on cutting red tape for private insurers.
- Do you see any need for a United States Institute of Peace? Can you name a single thing this agency has done? This just another example of how federal money is wasted on arcane projects in a time of fiscal crisis.
- Do you think reduced penalties and increased treatment for drug users would help reduce the flow of drugs from Latin America?Perhaps there is a role for this, but our primary focus should be on targeting the cartels overseas and on providing military and economic support to any government that will assist us in that endeavor.
- Should American workers have the right to invest their Social Security withholdings in private accounts? We definitely need to make some changes to the Social Security program, but this is going too far.
- Will you wear an American flag lapel on your suit as you campaign? It baffles me how someone could be ashamed to display the American flag. It seems a little unpatriotic to me.
- The Supreme Court will be deciding an affirmative action case this fall involving the University of Texas. Should colleges be allowed to consider the race of an applicant when deciding whether to admit them?Increased diversity is a valid goal for any administration. Students learn better when they are exposed to a variety of perspectives, and colleges should have a right to admit the best mix of students for their campus.
- The most recent data (for 2010) on Pell Grants indicate that 60% of all college students receive one. In that same year, the program cost $36 billion. What changes, if any, would you recommend to this program?Students are the future of this country and they need all the help they can get to make it through college, especially considering how much tuition has been increased over the past few years.
- What do you think the next steps should be in regards to Medicare?Medicare is a good program. We need to find some way of controlling costs and of more effectively managing care, but the overall program is sound.
- In the past you have expressed varying opinions about abortion. Can you reassure the evangelical Christian movement that you are 100% pro-life in all circumstances? We have to be realistic. I am pro-life in most cases, but we also need exceptions for cases of rape and incest. I do agree, however, that taxpayers should never be forced to finance this practice.
- Scott Brown is currently fighting the good fight in the Massachusetts Senate race. Would you be open to offering him a position in your Administration if he falls short there? We like Scott right where he is -- in the U.S. Senate. I'm confident that's where he'll be in 2013 as well.
- What will be the overriding theme of your nomination speech at the Republican Convention? My message will be a message of hope. After four years of economic blight the American people need to feel good about themselves, and they need to know that their efforts will be rewarded with material prosperity.
- What is your guiding foreign policy philosophy?American Exceptionalism -- Providence has given America to the world as an inspiration, and we must vigorously defend the ideals of peace and freedom wherever they may be threatened.
- In the most general terms, what will be your overall campaign strategy against Obama?I will reach out to moderates and conservative Democrats and attempt to build an all-encompassing coalition. It's time that America had a true leader in charge.
