Answers:
- A recent Supreme Court decision affirmed an Arizona law allowing officers to check suspected illegal immigrants for proof of immigration status. Do you think this law is a good idea? The federal government has forced Arizona's hand by being too lax on enforcement for far too long.
- To what extent should offshore drilling be permitted in the Gulf of Mexico? There should be no restrictions on Gulf Coast oil drilling. The civil penalties and public outrage incurred by BP were more than enough to prevent future incidents.
- There is currently a large amount of drug violence in Mexico near the U.S. border. What would you do as President to help stabilize this situation?I hate to keep coming back to this, but we need a wall at the border and we need to greatly step up our enforcement efforts. Longer prison sentences and a stronger DEA will reduce drug trafficking.
- What is your position on gay marriage?I'm opposed this personally. I think that, you know, different states have different opinions on this matter and it's best left to them to decide on the issue.
- Should military women serve in combat roles?Separate is inherently unequal. There is nothing preventing women from serving in combat roles.
- Do you support allowing the Bush Tax Cuts to expire for high-income households at the end of 2012?We should keep the tax cuts as is for the foreseeable future. I don't think it's sound economics to rise taxes on this group.
- We have now had 10 years to analyze the effects of the No Child Left Behind Act. Do you think it is time for a change? This idea was a failure from day one. Federal education funds are needed the most in low-income districts which have disproportionately suffered from this legislation.
- What is your opinion on directing some Department of Education funding towards a school voucher program? This is a good idea and it should be expanded.
- What is your opinion on the 'gunwalking' tactics that led to the 'Fast and Furious' scandal?Perhaps in limited cases. I am skeptical of these programs because they place too much faith in Mexican authorities to pursue cases once they cross the border.
- Should middle school students learn about contraception in health class, or will this simply encourage them to experiment? That doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Perhaps with high schoolers it makes more sense to, you know, delve into some of those details.
- The Affordable Care Act (i.e. 'Obamacare') will cap annual premiums, require minimum coverage levels, and outlaw discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. What do you think? This program will be a disaster. Not only is it an unconstitutional violation of personal freedom, but it will lead to a decline in American health care and will prove to be financially impossible to maintain without socializing the health care system.
- Do you have any comment to make on the performance of Ben Bernanke as Chairman of the Federal Reserve?Ben Bernanke has been a disaster. The Fed's expansionist monetary policy caused this recession, and the continuance of that policy has delayed our recovery.
- Should American workers have the right to invest their Social Security withholdings in private accounts? This is the first step that those who wish to abolish Social Security would like to implement. The integrity of Social Security should be preserved at all times.
- What is your opinion on the Occupy Wall Street movement?Occupy Wall Street is a great force in American life. It's unfortunate that the corporate-controlled media has worked so hard to marginalize this group.
- How do you feel about capitalism and the free market? We need greater cooperation between government and corporations. I'm not opposed to government investments and even ownership of key industries, where appropriate.
- Should large banks like Chase, Citibank, and Bank of America be broken up to reduce the risk of another financial crisis? These banks would have never grown so large in the first place without colluding with the federal government. They only exist now because of a corrupt and possibly unconstitutional bailout.
- What is the best way to make college more affordable for young people?Get the government out of higher education. Federal guarantees for student loans plus exorbitant funding for student grants combine to guarantee massive inflation in this area.
- Would you nominate any Democrats to your cabinet if elected? It's too early to say who exactly will be included in my Cabinet when I win this election. In all cases I will nominate the most qualified individual.
- The rhetoric from some Republicans towards immigrants from Mexico has been quite harsh. Can you distance yourself from such comments?I think in isolated cases a few people have said things that aren't appropriate. Overall however, it's important for us to maintain the proper level of vigilance on the immigration issue.
- What will be the overriding theme of your nomination speech at the Republican Convention?I will hammer on the theme that Obama has completely failed the United States as President. He has presided over the largest deficit increases and highest unemployment rate in almost a hundred years.
- What is your guiding foreign policy philosophy?American Exceptionalism -- Providence has given America to the world as an inspiration, and we must vigorously defend the ideals of peace and freedom wherever they may be threatened.
- To what extent will you speak about your religious faith (Mormonism) on the campaign trail?I already made one speech that was entirely devoted to this issue back in 2008. Bringing it up more often runs the risk of distracting the American people from the most important issues of this campaign.
- It has now been four years since the financial crisis plunged this country into a steep recession. Do you attribute current economic conditions more to Obama or to Bush?Barack Obama has presided over the highest unemployment rate and largest deficit increases in nearly a century. His management style has clearly been a total failure.
- Be perfectly honest. How do you like Barack Obama as a person?I don't particularly like Barack. It's hard to feel good about someone who promotes policies as misguided as his.
- In the most general terms, what will be your overall campaign strategy against Obama? We will attack Barack Obama relentlessly. He has gone back on his pledge to clean up our political system, he has destroyed hundreds of thousands of jobs in his first term, his values are out of touch with those of most Americans, and his health care reform is disastrous.
