- A recent Supreme Court decision affirmed an Arizona law allowing officers to check suspected illegal immigrants for proof of immigration status. Do you think this law is a good idea? The proper authority for enforcement rests with the federal government. This law goes further than federal laws and even if constitutional, should be repealed.
- Should the federal government continue to finance newer companies that attempt to develop alternative energy resources, such as solar power and electric car manufacturers?Obviously a couple of firms went bankrupt, but that happens sometimes with new companies. We shouldn't let that distract us from the overall idea of this project. Funding should remain as is.
- Should the United States have been so quick to drop its support for Hosni Mubarak in 2011, given recent events in Egypt? We should have been more active in brokering a compromise solution between Mubarak and the protestors.
- How do you view the practice of hydraulic fracturing (aka 'fracking') in the Dakotas and elsewhere?Fracking poisons our drinking water and postpones the development of alternative energy sources. This practice should be outlawed.
- To what extent should offshore drilling be permitted in the Gulf of Mexico? How can we be having this debate only two years after the Deepwater Horizon spill? Gulf Coast oil drilling should be severely restricted or banned.
- What is your position on gay marriage?Under no circumstances should the sacred institution of marriage be undermined. The Defense of Marriage Act was passed specifially to address this issue.
- Do you support allowing the Bush Tax Cuts to expire for high-income households at the end of 2012?I support letting the cuts expire. It's time that wealthy Americans paid their fair share for the opportunities our society gives to them.
- The United States has historically subsidized corn producers. With recent price increases in the corn market, do you still believe that such a program is necessary? This policy has contributed to the degradation of the American diet and contributes to our exploding obesity and diabetes epidemics. It should be ended.
- Will you launch an air campaign against Iranian nuclear sites if diplomatic negotiations continue to yield minimal results? The United States has no right to say who should or shouldn't have a nuclear weapon.
- What do you think we should do next in regards to Social Security?Talking about a bankrupt Social Security program is a right wing scare tactic. We could afford to increase benefits if we really wanted to.
- We have now had 10 years to analyze the effects of the No Child Left Behind Act. Do you think it is time for a change? This idea was a failure from day one. Federal education funds are needed the most in low-income districts which have disproportionately suffered from this legislation.
- Does it still make sense to provide military aid to Pakistan's government?Yes this is bad, but what are the alternatives? Should we let Pakistan fall to Muslim fundamentalists as well?
- The Affordable Care Act (i.e. 'Obamacare') will cap annual premiums, require minimum coverage levels, and outlaw discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. What do you think? There should be a public insurance company offering health care to all Americans. Private insurers are simply too greedy and too likely to turn down people with pre-existing health conditions.
- Do you think reduced penalties and increased treatment for drug users would help reduce the flow of drugs from Latin America?Have we forgotten what the early 1980s were like in Miami? I won't stand for appeasing foreign drug cartels.
- Without divulging a preference for any particular religious group, do you believe that America was founded as a Christian nation? This is an arcane debate. The First Amendment guarantees religious freedom in the U.S., and the personal beliefs of the founders are not a relevant policy issue.
- The most recent data (for 2010) on Pell Grants indicate that 60% of all college students receive one. In that same year, the program cost $36 billion. What changes, if any, would you recommend to this program? In Europe, secondary education is publicly funded. I'm just pointing that out...
- Who are the real job creators in this country -- hardworking American citizens or Washington bureaucrats? Are you expecting me to even answer such a loaded question?
- Some theorists have suggested that the government create guaranteed jobs at the federal minimum wage, to help support the labor market. Is this something that you would consider? If we created jobs like this at a set minimum wage, it would benefit everyone. Private sector wages would increase and economic insecurity would be greatly mitigated for millions of people.
- After episodes such as the 'flash crash' in 2010, would you support a small financial transactions tax, with the sole purpose being to target high-frequency trading systems?Automated high-frequency trading serves no purpose in our financial system. Such trading houses are parasitic in nature and a financial transactions tax on them is entirely appropriate.
- Some liberals say that you have done more to help Wall Street banks than hard-working Americans. Are you open to a more universal program of mortgage write-downs if housing prices continue to decline? We might consider purchasing delinquent mortgages and renting the homes out until a price recovery ensues. This will benefit those who are underwater on a mortgage, and will also stabilize home prices for the larger community.
- Do you think Hillary Clinton would make a good Presidential candidate in 2016?For all we know, I might be running against her again. If I lost a very tight election in 2012, maybe even winning the popular vote, do you really think I would lack the authority to try again in four years? That's what happened to Grover Cleveland you know, and he made a comeback, so let's not count me out here.
- What will be the overriding theme of your nomination speech at the Democratic Convention? It's important for people to remember the truth about our opponents. I will emphasize how their plans will kill Medicare as we know it, do nothing to combat the sluggish economy, and will only make the rich richer.
- Be perfectly honest. How do you like Mitt Romney as a person?I wish Mitt all the best in life as soon as he loses this election. He seems like a great guy once you get away from all of this politicking.
- What is your guiding foreign policy philosophy?Human Rights -- It's past time that we cut allegiances with dictators like the House of Saud and truly lived up to our ideals. I will only support or give aid to democratically elected leaders.
- In the most general terms, what will be your overall campaign strategy against Romney?I will pledge a new commitment to liberalism and economic revival. Our social programs and unions need to be protected. In those areas where Republicans continue to stand in the way of progress, we will look for other ways to get things done.
