Answers:

  • What is your opinion on the detention center at Guantanamo Bay? Would you consider closing it after the election?
The center at Guantanamo should definitely be closed. The only thing preventing it so far is obstructionism from the Republican Congress. Furthermore, there is no evidence that half of these detainees are even terrorists.
  • A recent Supreme Court decision affirmed an Arizona law allowing officers to check suspected illegal immigrants for proof of immigration status. Do you think this law is a good idea?
This is an unconscionable violation of civil rights and will certainly lead to racial profiling.
  • Does it make sense to dispose our nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain in Nevada?
Nuclear power has proven itself to be a dangerous policy idea. We should be moving away from nuclear and into more environmentally friendly types of energy.
  • How do you view the practice of hydraulic fracturing (aka 'fracking') in the Dakotas and elsewhere?
Fracking poisons our drinking water and postpones the development of alternative energy sources. This practice should be outlawed.
  • In November 2011, Ohio voters rejected a law to limit collective bargaining power for public unions. Do public sector unions such as teachers' and police unions have too much bargaining power?
Unions have been eviscerated by decades of outsourcing. Public unions are a necessary bulwark of the middle class and should have every right to bargain for fair wages and benefits.
  • What is your position on gay marriage?
Gay marriage should be protected at the federal level. The Defense of Marriage Act should be repealed.
  • Should military women serve in combat roles?
Separate is inherently unequal. There is nothing preventing women from serving in combat roles.
  • Do you support allowing the Bush Tax Cuts to expire for high-income households at the end of 2012?
I support letting the cuts expire. It's time that wealthy Americans paid their fair share for the opportunities our society gives to them.
  • The United States has historically subsidized corn producers. With recent price increases in the corn market, do you still believe that such a program is necessary?
The Department of Agriculture uses subsidies to rationally manage food production. It would be foolish to reverse that policy.
  • We have now had 10 years to analyze the effects of the No Child Left Behind Act. Do you think it is time for a change?
There is a danger of 'teaching to the test'. We do need some testing in place, but to do so on an annual basis is too frequent and interferes with good educational practice.
  • Should middle school students learn about contraception in health class, or will this simply encourage them to experiment?
This is a sensible policy that will reduce teen pregnancies and help our children make informed decisions.
  • The Affordable Care Act (i.e. 'Obamacare') will cap annual premiums, require minimum coverage levels, and outlaw discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. What do you think?
There should be a public insurance company offering health care to all Americans. Private insurers are simply too greedy and too likely to turn down people with pre-existing health conditions.
  • Should the DEA prosecute medicinal marijuana growers in states where that practice has been legalized?
This entire thing wouldn't even be an issue if marijuana were decriminalized as it should be. The DEA should never be prosecuting non-violent, licensed growers of medicinal marijuana.
  • Is it time for the federal government to cut spending, even with the economy growing at less than 2% annually?
Absolutely not. If anything, we should be increasing the size of government right now to fight the stagnant economy. Had the size of the initial Stimulus Act in 2009 been sufficient, for instance, we wouldn't be having these problems now.
  • Do you have any comment to make on the performance of Ben Bernanke as Chairman of the Federal Reserve?
I'm a little disappointed with the overly cautious stance Bernanke has taken towards interest rates and other programs. By raising the inflation target we could reduce the burden of our private and public debt and spark a more vigorous recovery.
  • Should military spending be cut to help reduce the deficit? If so, by how much?
How can Republicans talk about cutting the size of the federal government without supporting a dime of military cuts? In a post-Cold War environment, it makes absolutely no sense for us to spend what we do on defense. Military spending should be cut drastically.
  • Federal funding for Community Health Centers has more than doubled in the past ten years to over $2 billion annually. Is this an example of out of control government spending?
We need much greater spending to protect our most vulnerable citizens, but the least we can do is to make sure that existing programs like this one are protected from right-wing demagogues.
  • Who are the real job creators in this country -- hardworking American citizens or Washington bureaucrats?
Are you expecting me to even answer such a loaded question?
  • After episodes such as the 'flash crash' in 2010, would you support a small financial transactions tax, with the sole purpose being to target high-frequency trading systems?
Automated high-frequency trading serves no purpose in our financial system. Such trading houses are parasitic in nature and a financial transactions tax on them is entirely appropriate.
  • Many people speculate that the Affordable Health Care Act is the first step on the road to socialized medicine. Can you address these concerns?
Can't we just be honest? The ad-hoc, emergency room system we have in place now is a form of socialized medicine in and of itself. I'm actually trying to bring us back from that system into something that can be managed more rationally.
  • Elizabeth Warren is currently fighting the good fight in the Massachusetts Senate race. Would you be open to offering her a position in your Administration if she falls short there?
Let's hope it doesn't come to that. She is a brilliant, talented woman and no matter what happens, there will always be a place for her in government.
  • What will be the overriding theme of your nomination speech at the Democratic Convention?
I will talk at great length about how we've drifted from the tradition of liberalism that was built by the likes of Roosevelt, Johnson, and Humphrey. I will reaffirm my commitment to this vision in my second term.
  • Do you think Hillary Clinton would make a good Presidential candidate in 2016?
It's way too early to speculate on the 2016 election. We need to keep our attention on the here and now.
  • What is your guiding foreign policy philosophy?
Human Rights -- It's past time that we cut allegiances with dictators like the House of Saud and truly lived up to our ideals. I will only support or give aid to democratically elected leaders.
  • In the most general terms, what will be your overall campaign strategy against Romney?
I will pledge a new commitment to liberalism and economic revival. Our social programs and unions need to be protected. In those areas where Republicans continue to stand in the way of progress, we will look for other ways to get things done.
