Answers:
- What is your opinion on the detention center at Guantanamo Bay? Would you consider closing it after the election?Absolutely not. I am 100% opposed to terrorism and will not take any measures that could threaten the security of the United States. Can you imagine if we released one of these people and they went on to participate in an attack against our soil?
- A recent Supreme Court decision affirmed an Arizona law allowing officers to check suspected illegal immigrants for proof of immigration status. Do you think this law is a good idea?I don't want to comment on an issue that is best left to the voters of Arizona.
- How do you view the practice of hydraulic fracturing (aka 'fracking') in the Dakotas and elsewhere? This is a generational shift in the world energy game in the favor of the United States. There are plenty of regulations in place to protect our drinking water, and we simply cannot afford to miss out on the benefits of shale oil.
- Would you support posting active U.S. Army troops on the U.S.-Mexico border to prevent illegal immigration and drug smuggling? Those decisions, you know, I think our military is a fine force and that's not necessarily the best use of its resources.
- What is your position on gay marriage?I'm opposed this personally. I think that, you know, different states have different opinions on this matter and it's best left to them to decide on the issue.
- Do you support allowing the Bush Tax Cuts to expire for high-income households at the end of 2012?We should keep the tax cuts as is for the foreseeable future. I don't think it's sound economics to rise taxes on this group.
- Overall, are you satisfied with the trade relationship between the U.S. and China? This relationship has its pros and cons. China should be doing more to live up to their end of our trade agreements, and they must stop manipulating their currency.
- We have now had 10 years to analyze the effects of the No Child Left Behind Act. Do you think it is time for a change? This is a good program overall. Perhaps some minor details can be fixed, but without standardized testing there is no way to monitor the quality of our educational system.
- Do you support increased restrictions on handgun ownership?Gun rights are protected by the Second Amendment. Furthermore, an armed citizenry is our best defense against crime and government tyranny.
- Should all private insurance plans be required to cover contraceptives and birth control? The government has no right to dictate coverage requirements to private insurers.
- The Affordable Care Act (i.e. 'Obamacare') will cap annual premiums, require minimum coverage levels, and outlaw discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. What do you think? This is the wrong way to reform the American health care system. We should be focusing on malpractice reform and on cutting red tape for private insurers.
- Is it time for the federal government to cut spending, even with the economy growing at less than 2% annually? We're just now asking this question? The federal government has been bloated for decades.
- Should Angela Merkel be doing more to preserve to Euro as the European Union's common currency? If Merkel fails in this mission, we all will be affected negatively. I have the utmost faith that she realizes this and will act accordingly.
- Would you advocate cutting Peace Corps funding to help address the deficit? This is a valuable component of our international presence. We should maintain the funding we have in place, which is miniscule in proportion to our overall budget.
- Should military spending be cut to help reduce the deficit? If so, by how much?Undermining our national security is not the best way to address our government deficit. I support a strong defense under any circumstances.
- Without divulging a preference for any particular religious group, do you believe that America was founded as a Christian nation? All of our founders with only a couple exceptions were deeply Christian individuals, and they frequently referenced the hand of providence in their political writings.
- Is your campaign planning to allow Ron Paul a high-profile speaking slot at the Republican Convention, in light of the number of delegates that he commands? You know, it couldn't hurt to give Mr. Paul a few minutes outside of prime time. Even if his views are a little on the fringe, he does have a very committed following. I'm willing to compromise on a couple of issues if that's what it takes to bring them in.
- In the past you have expressed varying opinions about abortion. Can you reassure the evangelical Christian movement that you are 100% pro-life in all circumstances? We have to be realistic. I am pro-life in most cases, but we also need exceptions for cases of rape and incest. I do agree, however, that taxpayers should never be forced to finance this practice.
- You are one of the wealthiest individuals to ever run for President. Does this make it harder for you to understand the concerns of the average American voter? Not at all. I grew up in (somewhat) modest circumstances and I know what it's like to work your way up through life.
- Recent reports have highlighted the large amount of money that you and your wife spend on racing horses. Have you ever bet more than $10,000 on a horse race?Absolutely not. I wouldn't think of making a bet this large.
- What will be the overriding theme of your nomination speech at the Republican Convention? My message will be a message of hope. After four years of economic blight the American people need to feel good about themselves, and they need to know that their efforts will be rewarded with material prosperity.
- What is your guiding foreign policy philosophy?Human Rights -- It's past time that we cut allegiances with dictators like the House of Saud and truly lived up to our ideals. I will only support or give aid to democratically elected leaders.
- To what extent will you speak about your religious faith (Mormonism) on the campaign trail? On occasion it makes sense to bring this up. Over the years I have helped out many in need through the Mormon Church, both with my time and through charity. We should make sure the American people know this about me.
- Be perfectly honest. How do you like Barack Obama as a person?Barack is a decent guy. Our personal feelings for each other are not the issue. What's important are our differences of opinion on how to get the American economy moving.
- In the most general terms, what will be your overall campaign strategy against Obama?I will reach out to moderates and conservative Democrats and attempt to build an all-encompassing coalition. It's time that America had a true leader in charge.
