Answers:
- Should the government be doing more to stabilize home prices? There should be a federal program to cover any shortfall when a homeowner is forced to sell for less than the value of their mortgage.
- A recent Supreme Court decision affirmed an Arizona law allowing officers to check suspected illegal immigrants for proof of immigration status. Do you think this law is a good idea? This is an unconscionable violation of civil rights and will certainly lead to racial profiling.
- Does it make sense to dispose our nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain in Nevada? We have to put this waste somewhere. I understand the objections from some in Nevada, but where else are we supposed to store it?
- How do you view the practice of hydraulic fracturing (aka 'fracking') in the Dakotas and elsewhere?Fracking poisons our drinking water and postpones the development of alternative energy sources. This practice should be outlawed.
- Would you support posting active U.S. Army troops on the U.S.-Mexico border to prevent illegal immigration and drug smuggling?I support a wall and I support the presence of American troops. The purpose of the military is to defend our borders.
- What is your position on gay marriage?Gay marriage should be protected at the federal level. The Defense of Marriage Act should be repealed.
- Do you support allowing the Bush Tax Cuts to expire for high-income households at the end of 2012?I support letting the cuts expire. It's time that wealthy Americans paid their fair share for the opportunities our society gives to them.
- Overall, are you satisfied with the trade relationship between the U.S. and China? This should be a model for other trade agreements as the developing world continues to seek the benefits of globalization.
- The United States has historically subsidized corn producers. With recent price increases in the corn market, do you still believe that such a program is necessary? The Department of Agriculture uses subsidies to rationally manage food production. It would be foolish to reverse that policy.
- What do you think we should do next in regards to Social Security?Talking about a bankrupt Social Security program is a right wing scare tactic. We could afford to increase benefits if we really wanted to.
- The Affordable Care Act (i.e. 'Obamacare') will cap annual premiums, require minimum coverage levels, and outlaw discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. What do you think? There should be a public insurance company offering health care to all Americans. Private insurers are simply too greedy and too likely to turn down people with pre-existing health conditions.
- Should Angela Merkel be doing more to preserve to Euro as the European Union's common currency? The Euro is destined to fail. I can hardly blame Germany for losing patience with its less fiscally scrupulous neighbors.
- Would you consider a default on some U.S. debt obligations if the financial situation of the country continues to deteriorate? We need to consider all options. A controlled debt writedown just might be the best way to reignite the world economy, which is suffering from an abundance of bad debt at the current moment.
- Should federal fuel taxes be slightly increased (they have been the same since 1993) to avoid another catastrophe like the Minnesota bridge collapse of 2007?I don't see a problem with a small increase. We should be encouraging other forms of transportation, and on top of that our highways are woefully underfunded.
- What actions do you support to mitigate the effects of climate change? We should have more laws and regulations to reduce our total carbon emissions. Sensible next steps include some combination of a cap-and-trade program domestically, as well as international agreements with other nations.
- Federal funding for Community Health Centers has more than doubled in the past ten years to over $2 billion annually. Is this an example of out of control government spending? This is a worthy program and I have no problem with the amount of money that is allocated to it.
- Who are the real job creators in this country -- hardworking American citizens or Washington bureaucrats? Are you expecting me to even answer such a loaded question?
- This morning you went to an elementary school and read books to a class of second-graders. How did you enjoy yourself?I had a fantastic time. Days like today remind me of why we need more federal funding for education.
- If elected, what will you do to repeal Obamacare?Obamacare is settled law at this point, unfortunately. As President I will make sure that its programs are administered in the most efficient way possible, to give this program the best chance of success.
- Can you clear up any confusion with the Republican base about your beliefs on global warming? There shouldn't be any confusion at this point. I have repeatedly said that there is no evidence that global warming even exists.
- Would you nominate any Democrats to your cabinet if elected?Hillary Clinton has done an outstanding job as Secretary of State. I would be glad to have her on board for my Administration.
- What will be the overriding theme of your nomination speech at the Republican Convention?I will address the long-term danger that liberalism has to create an ossified, uncreative society. I will also emphasize the danger to our individual and collective rights that is inherent Obama's philosophy.
- What is your guiding foreign policy philosophy?Human Rights -- It's past time that we cut allegiances with dictators like the House of Saud and truly lived up to our ideals. I will only support or give aid to democratically elected leaders.
- Be perfectly honest. How do you like Barack Obama as a person?Barack Obama is a smart, engaging man. I like him and wish him all the best after we defeat him in November.
- In the most general terms, what will be your overall campaign strategy against Obama?I will emphasize the conservatism of my views and my governing philosophy. I will remind the American people that I am strong on defense and that I'm pro-life, pro-free market, pro-business, and deeply religious.
