- What is your overall position on the Vietnam War?We should stop bombing North Vietnam and attempt to negotiate a peace settlement. In the mean time, we should be putting our troops at risk only when absolutely necessary.
- If elected, what will you do to get the student and Negro riots in this country under control?If we had peace in Vietnam and more investment in education here at home, we wouldn't be having these riots.
- What is your opinion of Lyndon Johnson's new Medicare program?We need to be very cautious about this program. It's important to ensure that the indigent can receive care, but programs like these always run the risk of adding precipitously to our national deficit.
- Are you satisfied with this nation's economic performance over the previous five years?The unemployment rate right now is under four percent. Workers, particularly those in labor unions, enjoy high purchasing power and an ever-expanding lifestyle. Economic growth throughout the 1960s has been outstanding.
- Are you satisfied with the progress of desegregation in this country since the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964?We have achieved great strides on this issue in the past twenty years -- and let the record show that Hubert H. Humphrey was at the forefront of this movement as early as 1948. We still have a long way to go, however, before we can truly realize the dream of Martin Luther King.
- Would you consider sending troops into Laos, Cambodia, or North Vietnam to more aggressively combat the flow of Communist troops into South Vietnam?I don't think that kind of escalation is wise. The last thing we need is a regional war. I would stick to our mission of defending South Vietnam and preventing the spread of Communism.
- What is your opinion of the military draft that is currently in place?We need to make sure that our military is adequately filled with personnel. That being said, I would prefer to see a volunteer system in place. I'm confident that there are enough patriotic young men in this country to make that system work.
- Should Lyndon Johnson have been able to prevent the Tet Offensive?I'm worried that for most or all of 1967, Lyndon Johnson repeatedly assured us that the North Vietnamese were on their last legs. It's difficult to assess the situation when we can't rely on the information that we have.
- Would you be willing to place increasing responsibility in the hands of South Vietnam for their own defense?I will withdraw American troops from Vietnam as soon as possible. The South Vietnamese should be capable of defending their own borders if they are as afraid of the Communist menace as they say they are.
- What is the maximum number of troops that you would commit to Vietnam?We need to reduce our troop strength to the minimum necessary level to prevent the downfall of South Vietnam while we work these issues out at the bargaining table.
- Do you support opening a new dialogue with our Communist adversaries, such as the Soviet Union and China?The best way to prevent future Communist aggression is not through the death of 25,000 American kids in Vietnam. I support a comprehensive summit aimed at codifying peace in the modern world.
- Are you concerned with some of the activist stances that Earl Warren has taken in his time with the Supreme Court?Earl Warren is without a doubt the worst Supreme Court justice in the history of the United States. From Brown v. Board of Education up through the present day, he has been nothing but an agent of tyranny for the federal government.
- Has the current Supreme Court contributed to our disorder with decisions such as Gideon v. Wainright and Miranda v. Arizona?My priority as President will be to fight for law and order in this country. The Court had good intentions but I am concerned that they overstepped their bounds in these cases.
- What do you think of programs that require schools to use busing to achieve racial balance?Busing is nothing but another conspiracy to mongrelize the races of this country. First it was the Brown decision. Now it's some policy that some academic came up with to send children to school thirty miles from their house as part of some social engineering scheme.
- Can you comment on the newly created Head Start program?Programs like Head Start are the only way that we will end poverty in our cities and rural districts. I fought for this program from the beginning and I will support it as President.
- What is causing the massive increase of crime in America? How will you reverse the trend?We need to improve our policing practices, prevent riots and disorder, and also address the underlying economic causes that spread dissatisfaction with the status quo.
- What is your position on expanding the Clean Air Act of 1963? Do you believe that stricter enforcement against pollutants is necessary, or does the current law suffice?I dream of a country where every citizen has clean air to breathe. The Clean Air Act is a good start but I'm not opposed to further legislation in this area.
- The unemployment rate is currently under 4%, in spite of the chaos that prevails in our nation. What will you do as president to keep unemployment low?We are keeping the unemployment rate artificially depressed with unsound fiscal and monetary policies. In the long-run, this will lead to a poor economy and higher unemployment.
- What is the overall theme of your campaign, remembering that the Democratic Party is underfunded and severely divided?First and foremost, I will end the war in Vietnam by any means necessary. Beyond that I will support the AFL-CIO and otherwise bear the standard for liberalism in this country.
- What will you say in your acceptance speech at the Democratic Convention in Chicago? Will you address the rioting outside and the legacy of Robert Kennedy?I will remind the American people that we stand at a critical juncture in the Civil Rights movement, pledge my full support, and also pledge to end the violence in the streets.
- An alarming percentage of union voters are inspired by the aggressively racist rhetoric of George Wallace. What will you do to win this group back to your side?Without Texas we are done in this election. I will clearly state my disagreement with Wallace, but we should focus on other issues for the most part.
- Richard Nixon, perhaps remembering the debacle of 1960, has expressed little interest in a debate this election. Will you challenge him to one?This is a real opening for us. I will challenge Nixon on this issue relentlessly.
- After the debacle of the convention in Chicago, are you willing to make a statement condemning the student protestors? Or conversely, one blaming the Chicago police?I won't be making any statements about Chicago in my campaign. We should forget this as soon as possible and move on to the issues affecting our country.
- On the weekend before the election, Lyndon Johnson's peace negotiations have collapsed with the North Vietnamese. Even worse, there are rumors that a Nixon operative has sabotaged the negotiations. Nixon swears to you on his honor that he is innocent. Will you make this an issue over the last two days of the campaign?This is bordering on treason. The American people deserve to hear about this.
- What is more important to you -- competing with Nixon in the border states (to help Humphrey) or winning over Humphrey voters in the northern cities (to help Nixon)?Humphrey and the Democrats need to know in the future that they cannot ignore the due concerns of the South and win elections. I will focus on winning potential Humphrey supporters.
