Answers:

  • Some observers have argued that an embargo of Cuba makes little sense in a post Cold War environment. What do you think?
I dislike Fidel Castro as much as anyone. We should keep the embargo but also look for other ways to democratize that country.
  • Do you believe the federal government is doing enough to enforce laws against employing illegal immigrants?
The flow of illegal immigrants into the U.S. has slowed in recent years. We should be focusing more on expanding legal opportunities and bringing immigrants out of the shadows.
  • A recent Supreme Court decision affirmed an Arizona law allowing officers to check suspected illegal immigrants for proof of immigration status. Do you think this law is a good idea?
This is an unconscionable violation of civil rights and will certainly lead to racial profiling.
  • Does it make sense to dispose our nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain in Nevada?
I think that what we're doing now is fine. There is no point in revisiting this issue, since the Yucca Mountain plans have been scrapped in any case.
  • What is your position on gay marriage?
Gay marriage should be protected at the federal level. The Defense of Marriage Act should be repealed.
  • Is the United States too reliant on fossil fuels for its energy needs?
The answer is obvious. By continuing to rely on non-renewable energy sources, we place ourselves at greater risk for future energy shocks and we contribute to global warming.
  • Do you support allowing the Bush Tax Cuts to expire for high-income households at the end of 2012?
I support letting the cuts expire. It's time that wealthy Americans paid their fair share for the opportunities our society gives to them.
  • What do you think we should do next in regards to Social Security?
With minor changes like an increase to the retirement age and means testing after a certain benefit level, we can ensure the solvency of this program long into the future.
  • Do you support increased restrictions on handgun ownership?
Some limited, sensible regulation is prudent. Overall, the right to own a gun should be protected.
  • Does it still make sense to provide military aid to Pakistan's government?
Further aid should be directly tied to Pakistan's continuing progress towards openness and democracy.
  • The Affordable Care Act (i.e. 'Obamacare') will cap annual premiums, require minimum coverage levels, and outlaw discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. What do you think?
I'm convinced that this program will work. This is a good compromise allowing private insurers to conduct business, while securing access to health insurance for more Americans. If anything, the increased transparency will reduce insurance costs.
  • Should the DEA prosecute medicinal marijuana growers in states where that practice has been legalized?
We might disagree with these laws, but it is the responsibility of the DEA to uphold them. I do think we can look into reducing the penalties, which should decrease the strain on our prisons and allow people a second chance to lead productive lives.
  • The maximum duration of unemployment insurance, with all extensions factored in, has been reduced from 99 weeks. Do you think this is appropriate in the current economic climate?
This is entirely appropriate for an economy recovering from the worst recession since the 1930s. Additionally, there have been repeated jobs proposals in Congress, all of which have been sabotaged by Republican obstructionism.
  • Should Angela Merkel be doing more to preserve to Euro as the European Union's common currency?
What's happening now in Europe is criminal. The working class is being punished to fulfill the avarice of huge, multinational banks. Germany should be doing much more to assist Greece, Italy, and Spain before it is too late.
  • Should taxpayers be forced to subsidize Planned Parenthood via federal subsidies?
Planned Parenthood is an essential component of our public health system. The right of women to control their bodies and their reproductive destinies is inviolable.
  • Should the Social Security Trust Fund be purchasing U.S. Treasury bills? Should it be allowed to invest in other bonds and securities to potentially increase its rate of return? Or conversely, should the funds be held in a 'lockbox' to guarantee benefit payments?
I think anyone who has managed money can tell you there is a place for U.S. Treasuries in any professional portfolio. Allowing the Social Security fund to invest in other securities opens a huge number of potential problems and conflicts of interest.
  • Should American workers have the right to invest their Social Security withholdings in private accounts?
If practical I would support a program that allows younger workers to invest a certain portion of their Social Security taxes into a different program.
  • Should federal fuel taxes be slightly increased (they have been the same since 1993) to avoid another catastrophe like the Minnesota bridge collapse of 2007?
I don't see a problem with a small increase. We should be encouraging other forms of transportation, and on top of that our highways are woefully underfunded.
  • What actions do you support to mitigate the effects of climate change?
We should have more laws and regulations to reduce our total carbon emissions. Sensible next steps include some combination of a cap-and-trade program domestically, as well as international agreements with other nations.
  • Without divulging a preference for any particular religious group, do you believe that America was founded as a Christian nation?
Thomas Jefferson himself rebuked this notion in his writings. Now over two hundred years later, religious fanatics are trying to bring this idea back. This is part of a dangerous, long-term agenda to turn the U.S. into a sectarian state.
  • Elizabeth Warren is currently fighting the good fight in the Massachusetts Senate race. Would you be open to offering her a position in your Administration if she falls short there?
Let's hope it doesn't come to that. She is a brilliant, talented woman and no matter what happens, there will always be a place for her in government.
  • What will be the overriding theme of your nomination speech at the Democratic Convention?
I will talk about the myriad methods that the Republicans use to divide our country. I will remind everyone that Democrats are truly the party of the common person -- regardless of background or income level.
  • Joe Biden made what can only be described as a gaffe on the campaign trail today. What are your comments?
It's certainly alarming to hear statements like these from someone as high-up as Joe Biden. Hopefully he can explain himself a little more clearly in the next few days.
  • What is your guiding foreign policy philosophy?
Human Rights -- It's past time that we cut allegiances with dictators like the House of Saud and truly lived up to our ideals. I will only support or give aid to democratically elected leaders.
  • In the most general terms, what will be your overall campaign strategy against Romney?
Behind the scenes my surrogates have plenty of dirt to spread about Romney and the Republicans. As President, I will stick to a message of optimism and hope in my own campaign speeches.
