  • Some observers have argued that an embargo of Cuba makes little sense in a post Cold War environment. What do you think?
    I dislike Fidel Castro as much as anyone. We should keep the embargo but also look for other ways to democratize that country.
  • Should the Confederate flag be removed entirely from the South Carolina statehouse grounds?
    The good people of South Carolina have already worked out a compromise on this issue, and I don't see how it's useful for us today to revisit that.
  • A recent Supreme Court decision affirmed an Arizona law allowing officers to check suspected illegal immigrants for proof of immigration status. Do you think this law is a good idea?
    This is an unconscionable violation of civil rights and will certainly lead to racial profiling.
  • Do you have an opinion on net neutrality?
    Internet service providers should have a right to charge fair value for the service they provide. I'm not comfortable with anything that would regulate their ability to serve their customers.
  • Would you support posting active U.S. Army troops on the U.S.-Mexico border to prevent illegal immigration and drug smuggling?
    This is probably unconstitutional and would represent another step in the transformation of our country into a police state.
  • What is your position on gay marriage?
    Gay marriage should be protected at the federal level. The Defense of Marriage Act should be repealed.
  • Should military women serve in combat roles?
    I will defer to military brass on this question. They should do whatever best protects American interests and the safety of our troops.
  • Do you support allowing the Bush Tax Cuts to expire for high-income households at the end of 2012?
    Our most productive citizens need further tax cuts to stimulate business confidence, investment, and further job creation.
  • The Affordable Care Act (i.e. 'Obamacare') will cap annual premiums, require minimum coverage levels, and outlaw discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. What do you think?
    There should be a public insurance company offering health care to all Americans. Private insurers are simply too greedy and too likely to turn down people with pre-existing health conditions.
  • Should the DEA prosecute medicinal marijuana growers in states where that practice has been legalized?
    This entire thing wouldn't even be an issue if marijuana were decriminalized as it should be. The DEA should never be prosecuting non-violent, licensed growers of medicinal marijuana.
  • Do you see any need for a United States Institute of Peace?
    This agency performs valuable research on how to avoid future conflicts. It will pay for itself many times over if it succeeds at that mission.
  • Should Angela Merkel be doing more to preserve to Euro as the European Union's common currency?
    If Merkel fails in this mission, we all will be affected negatively. I have the utmost faith that she realizes this and will act accordingly.
  • What is your opinion on the Occupy Wall Street movement?
    Occupy Wall Street is a great force in American life. It's unfortunate that the corporate-controlled media has worked so hard to marginalize this group.
  • Should military spending be cut to help reduce the deficit? If so, by how much?
    Compared to our potential adversaries, we spend a colossal amount on our military infrastructure. Certainly any attempt to reduce our deficit should include a few cuts in the military.
  • The most recent poll showed you slipping by a couple of percentage points. Are you planning on making any changes in your campaign to address this?
    We don't pay attention to things like polls and focus groups. We just go out every day and present our message to the American people. Everything else will take care of itself.
  • Is there too much regulation of the American logging industry?
    Current practices are much too permissive. Priceless old-growth forest has been almost completely destroyed, and we are headed into the future on an unsustainable trajectory.
  • Mitt Romney was the CEO of Bain Capital for many years. What can you say about his time at that firm?
    Obviously he was quite successful. I'm not convinced that all of that success came in a way that the American people would approve of, but that's up to the voters to decide.
  • Christina Romer -- formerly the Chairperson on your Council of Economic Advisors -- stated in 2009 that unemployment would be less than 6% by 2012 if the stimulus package was enacted. What went wrong, and did the results of the stimulus have any bearing on her resignation?
    First of all, this had no bearing on her decision to leave the Obama Administration. Secondly, the economy was in much worse shape in early 2009 than anyone realized. Since that time we have repeatedly tried to pass additional stimulus measures and have been thwarted by House Republicans at every opportunity.
  • Elizabeth Warren is currently fighting the good fight in the Massachusetts Senate race. Would you be open to offering her a position in your Administration if she falls short there?
    She was supposed to be the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Board, remember? Republican obstructionism prevented that. I'm confident that she will do well against Scott Brown in the Massachusetts Senate race.
  • What will be the overriding theme of your nomination speech at the Democratic Convention?
    I will talk about the myriad methods that the Republicans use to divide our country. I will remind everyone that Democrats are truly the party of the common person -- regardless of background or income level.
  • Do you think Hillary Clinton would make a good Presidential candidate in 2016?
    Hillary Clinton is a wonderful, talented woman and I wish her all the best if she decides to pursue that course in four years.
  • Would you support an Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution to protect women's rights?
    Absolutely I would. We need to reaffirm our collective commitment to this issue.
  • Be perfectly honest. How do you like Mitt Romney as a person?
    Mitt Romney is a great American success story. His efforts over the years have been admirable. I just don't think he has the best policies in mind for America.
  • What is your guiding foreign policy philosophy?
    Pragmatism -- Our foreign policy right now is effective. We need to guide foreign nations towards democracy and open markets. Doing so will increase the world's prosperity and decrease the chance of future wars.
  • In the most general terms, what will be your overall campaign strategy against Romney?
    I will pledge a new commitment to liberalism and economic revival. Our social programs and unions need to be protected. In those areas where Republicans continue to stand in the way of progress, we will look for other ways to get things done.
