Answers:
- What is your opinion on the detention center at Guantanamo Bay? Would you consider closing it after the election? It's a difficult issue, but given the dangerous nature of these detainees, the center should remain open.
- Should the government be doing more to stabilize home prices? The government has no business regulating the value of a home. We will never fully recover from this recession until prices are allowed to find their floor, and then start increasing through market forces.
- A recent Supreme Court decision affirmed an Arizona law allowing officers to check suspected illegal immigrants for proof of immigration status. Do you think this law is a good idea? This is an unconscionable violation of civil rights and will certainly lead to racial profiling.
- What is your position on gay marriage?I'm opposed this personally. I think that, you know, different states have different opinions on this matter and it's best left to them to decide on the issue.
- Is the United States too reliant on fossil fuels for its energy needs?Fossil fuels and coal are the backbone of our energy supply. If we got rid of those, what would we have left? We have to be realistic and realize that our options are limited.
- Do you support allowing the Bush Tax Cuts to expire for high-income households at the end of 2012?Our most productive citizens need further tax cuts to stimulate business confidence, investment, and further job creation.
- Would it help our economy if government employment was increased? Or would this divert valuable resources from the private sector? It's dangerous to rely too much on government as opposed to the private sector. We shouldn't be looking at government spending and employment to resolve these issues.
- What is your opinion on the 'gunwalking' tactics that led to the 'Fast and Furious' scandal? The tactic of 'gunwalking' led directly to the death of a Border Patrol agent. If we see people breaking the law, it makes no sense not to punish them. I would support the removal of Eric Holder as Attorney General.
- Does it still make sense to provide military aid to Pakistan's government?I will undertake a full review of all military aid with a distinguished panel as soon as the election is over.
- The Affordable Care Act (i.e. 'Obamacare') will cap annual premiums, require minimum coverage levels, and outlaw discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. What do you think? This program will be a disaster. Not only is it an unconstitutional violation of personal freedom, but it will lead to a decline in American health care and will prove to be financially impossible to maintain without socializing the health care system.
- Would you support a Constitutional Amendment to overturn some provisions of the Citizens United ruling, affecting campaign finance by PAC's?Perhaps not a Constitutional Amendment. These should be reserved for the most serious of issues. I think we can investigate maybe other ways to prevent money from having an undue influence in politics.
- Should the DEA prosecute medicinal marijuana growers in states where that practice has been legalized? We might disagree with these laws, but it is the responsibility of the DEA to uphold them. I do think we can look into reducing the penalties, which should decrease the strain on our prisons and allow people a second chance to lead productive lives.
- Do you think the Death with Dignity Act in Oregon could be a model for broader federal legislation on the issue? That's ridiculous. Of course not.
- The maximum duration of unemployment insurance, with all extensions factored in, has been reduced from 99 weeks. Do you think this is appropriate in the current economic climate? That is nearly two years. We need unemployment benefits but these extensions were clearly out of control.
- How do you feel about capitalism and the free market?I am a firm proponent of the free market. We simply need effective regulation to make sure that the economy works as best as it possibly can.
- Should large banks like Chase, Citibank, and Bank of America be broken up to reduce the risk of another financial crisis? That's not the best solution for us to take. The last thing we need right now in the financial sector is some kind of arbitrary, destabilizing government action.
- The most recent poll showed you slipping by a couple of percentage points. Are you planning on making any changes in your campaign to address this? The only day that matters is election day. I think the fundamental incompetence of my opponent will be obvious by that point.
- What is the best way to make college more affordable for young people? There's not much that we can change right now. The system is hardly perfect but anything else we do will only make it worse.
- After episodes such as the 'flash crash' in 2010, would you support a small financial transactions tax, with the sole purpose being to target high-frequency trading systems?A financial transactions tax would surely portend even more inept government meddling in the financial sector.
- Can you clear up any confusion with the Republican base about your beliefs on global warming?I would be glad to. Even if the earth is getting warmer, it's impossible to say that human activity is the main driver. We've had these fluctuations over and over again during the geological history of our planet.
- Recent reports have highlighted the large amount of money that you and your wife spend on racing horses. Have you ever bet more than $10,000 on a horse race?Absolutely not. I wouldn't think of making a bet this large.
- What will be the overriding theme of your nomination speech at the Republican Convention? My message will be a message of hope. After four years of economic blight the American people need to feel good about themselves, and they need to know that their efforts will be rewarded with material prosperity.
- What is your guiding foreign policy philosophy?American Exceptionalism -- Providence has given America to the world as an inspiration, and we must vigorously defend the ideals of peace and freedom wherever they may be threatened.
- To what extent will you speak about your religious faith (Mormonism) on the campaign trail?I already made one speech that was entirely devoted to this issue back in 2008. Bringing it up more often runs the risk of distracting the American people from the most important issues of this campaign.
- In the most general terms, what will be your overall campaign strategy against Obama? My surrogates have plenty of points to make about the failure of the Obama Administration. As the nominee, I will take the high road and stick to a message of optimism and American renewal.
